Lucent Technologies: Corporate Security Case Study

The Challenge
Develop a communications program aimed at increasing employee awareness of Lucent Corporate Security practices. The program needed to be designed in a way that made it visible to employees in all Lucent environments including office and manufacturing locations. The program also had to translate into a variety of foreign languages including both the graphic and copy. In addition, A&R was asked to develop support materials for distribution directly to employees and vendors, as well as additional communications vehicles for reaching Lucent personnel at their work stations.

The A&R Solution
A&R developed a program that addressed three areas of importance. Direct/Intrusive presentation of information, support materials for employee use and, an on-line information resource.

To reach employees within each Lucent facility, a series of oversized posters were created for lobbies and other high traffic locations in Lucent buildings. The posters were created using illustrations rather than photographs so that ethnic sensibilities would be met. The series addressed key-high priority subjects provided by Lucent Security.

Each month a new poster was created and distributed throughout the Lucent network. A&R designed and created the copy for each poster as well as arranging for foreign language translations. Once translated, A&R prepared each poster for printing.

The second part of the A&R strategy was to ensure that employees had support materials that they could access easily. A&R created a series of brochures and pamphlets for distribution to all employees which detailed security practices and "how to" applications, as well as reference phone numbers and points of contact.

We assisted in the planning and development of highly vertical security literature including the Technical Surveillance Counter Measures group, as well as the Executive Security Services group.

The third segment was an on-line information vehicle that could be easily accessed by all employees on an on-going basis-reporting on both security regulations and protocols as well as interesting security stories from around the company. A&R developed an on-line newsletter called "Security Matters." The newsletter is produced and programmed by A&R on a monthly basis and provided to Corporate Security for uploading onto the Lucent Intranet site.

Results
The poster campaign has now been running for two years. Lucent is currently preparing a research study analyzing the results of the program. While the data collection is not yet completed, indications from Corporate Security management are that the program is an overwhelming success. The support literature has received high marks from both management and employee groups.

The initial response to The Security Matters newsletter has been exceptional. As a result of the programs effectiveness, A&R was contacted by Avaya's Corporate Security Group to create a Security Awareness program based on the model we developed for Lucent.
